Save & Splurge: Apparel

by Jul 22, 2016blog

Whenever we go through a wardrobe makeover, the same question always arises: what do we splurge and what do we save on? The answer is simple: everyone is different! We all use different items more than others, and vice versa but there are classic staples that every woman needs in her closet. Splurge on the things you use most so they’ll last over time. Here is my advice on closet necessities and how to spend your money wisely so you look forward to picking out your outfit each and every day!

Black Leather Jacket

Every woman needs a good leather jacket in her closet. Whether you live in cold or warm weather, you’ll still need it just the same. If you use your leather jacket as a day-to-day staple, splurge on it! Get a classic look like this one from Isabel Marant (left) that will last you for years. If you don’t use a jacket as often as others, there are still plenty of affordable options like this one from GAP (right) that won’t break the bank and look just as chic.

Black Blazer

You’re definitely going to need a black blazer in your closet! So this is one you’ll probably want to splurge on. Even if you don’t have to go into an office every day for work, a blazer can be used to dress up any outfit. Veronica Beard has great classic looks that can be used to dress up an outfit in jeans, skirts, or with a pant suit for work.

Plain White Tee

You can’t go wrong with a plain white t-shirt. You can dress it up or down and wear it to almost any occasion. You can also buy a white tee at any price point. Banana Republic has great options for a reasonable price but if you want to splurge on a great shirt that will last you longer try Wilt (right) or LNA (left) for a trendier look.

Little Black Dress

The LBD is also one you’ll want to splurge on. You undoubtedly need it for numerous occasions: work functions, date nights, or just to wear around the office. There are various styles to choose from for any occasion so you can make your look more classic or trendy, whatever suits you best.

Denim Jacket

Denim is extremely in right now, so this won’t be hard to find. You can find denim jackets almost anywhere at several price points. If a great denim jacket is one of your go-to’s then make it a splurge you’ll be able to wear all the time. If the jean look isn’t your favorite, you should still have on in your closet but can find great options for a fraction of the price. Look to brands like AG (left) or Paige for more expensive items while GAP (right) has great options for a more modest price.

Cashmere Sweater

A cashmere sweater is another essential. Both long and short sleeves are important as they can work for multiple occasions. Kit and Ace (left), J.Crew (right), and Uniqlo have great options in several colors and cuts for everyone’s unique style.

Pencil Skirt

A grey or black pencil skirt is also a necessity for your closet. It’s a great staple for your work attire or even daytime function. You can find a pricier option at brands like Theory or Alice & Olivia (right) while Madewell (left) makes more affordable yet fashionable options.

Classic Coat

Even if you live in Miami where the weather is always warm, you still need a classic coat you can wear whenever you travel. You won’t want to have to go shopping every time you make your way up north, so have a great coat in your closet from classic brands like Burberry that are timeless and ready for impromptu trips.

Pajama Set

Last but not least, treat yourself to a great pair of PJs. Just because no one will see it doesn’t mean you can’t splurge on it. Eberjey has adorable options made with comfy material so you will sleep like a queen at night. It’s worth the splurge and will last you longer than a cheaper pair you’ll have to eventually replace.
