Happy New Year! I know I’m a bit late with this sentiment but it is technically still January, and that means it’s time to get serious about our closets and our wardrobes! A full closet cleanse is the perfect way to ring in the New Year and give you peace of mind all year long. Think of it as “out with the old (goodbye, 2024!) and in with the new.” This fresh start can help you overcome feeling overwhelmed, disorganized, or stuck in a wardrobe rut.
Understanding Closet Energy
“Closet energy” is that feeling of excitement you get when you walk into your closet. It’s about loving what you see and how it makes you feel. A closet cleanse helps you achieve this by giving you a clear picture of what you have, what you love to wear, and how to wear it.
When you have less, you wear more. You’ll feel a sense of freedom from those unworn pieces that were just taking up space “just in case.” Let’s be honest, looking at clothes we don’t wear makes us feel guilty! Getting dressed should be fun, exciting, and experimental, never stressful.

Preparing for Your Closet Cleanse: 4 Mindset Pillars
Before you start purging, it’s crucial to have the right mindset. These tips will help you stay focused and motivated:
- Consider Your Time: Don’t try to tackle everything at once. If you only have a couple of hours, work in small increments. Start with manageable categories like socks or workout wear. Schedule your cleanse in your calendar, giving yourself 1-2 weeks to complete it.
- Detach from Emotions: Leave sentimentality at the door. Focus on whether items fit, flatter your current style, and are in good condition. Ask yourself, “Is this item truly serving me by sitting here?”
- Forget About the Money: Don’t let the price tag influence your decisions. If you have expensive pieces you no longer wear, consider selling them.
- Get Rid of What You Can’t Currently Wear: Purge anything that doesn’t fit! Dress for the body you have now. This means letting go of pieces that are significantly too big or small. You want clothes that make you feel good and look good today!
Essential Closet Organizers
Here are some of my favorite closet organizers that keep everything tidy, functional, and chic!
Tips for a Successful Closet Refresh
- Break it Down: Dedicate 20-30 minutes or an hour each day to your closet refresh. This consistent effort will keep you motivated and prevent overwhelm.
- Start with a Key Category: Begin with the category that’s most important to you, such as jeans, tops, or workwear. Put everything on a rolling rack or your bed and go through each piece.
- Try Things On: Don’t just assume something still works. Try it on! Does it fit the way you want it to? Do you feel great in it? Does it excite you? Is it truly your style? Answering these questions will help you decide what stays and what goes.
- Clean Out Your Lingerie Drawer: Get rid of anything old, tattered, or ill-fitting. Bras, underwear, and shapewear don’t last forever. Invest in new bras every six months and replace worn-out underwear.
- The “Maybe” Pile: If you’re unsure about certain pieces, put them in the front of your closet and force yourself to wear them. If you don’t feel great in something, donate it. If you love it, it’s a keeper!
- The Hanger Trick: Turn your hangers around when you wear something. At the end of the month, you’ll have a visual representation of what you wear and what you don’t. This can be incredibly insightful!
Less is More in 2025
Remember, less is more! The less you have in your closet, the easier it is to get dressed, put together outfits, and shop with intention. You’ll be able to hone in on your personal style and truly show up as the best version of yourself.
